HP printer stuck on last page

I have an HP X476dn, USB connected to a new retina iMac, which shipped with yosemite. I did not install HP drivers, but instead had OSX decide on its drivers. I know that this is an OSX bug, because an OSX reboot will cure this---I have tried this. (it is over longer times that this bug manifests itself.)

I also had earlier iMac's which worked just fine with this printer.

obviously, it is not particularly fun to have to reboot regularly to use a printer. "it just [doesn't] works"

I don't see anything useful in /var/log/cups/*log that tells me that I suffer an error. what do I do??

I did not even know what this was until I googled it. It was well hidden. Thank you for the hint.

This deletes the printer. Then it hangs on configuring printer. When I click on "Configure" and then "OK", it unhangs and finishes its configuration.

Thereafter, there is an "HP Utility" Application open in my dock. Is it supposed to be always open? Is it supposed to "Open at Login"?

I too have had similar problems with my HP C4780. We buy cheap paper at Office Max and it gets jammed. Clearing rollers brings no relief to error message so utilities cannot clean or reset rollers for next print job.

Uninstalling HP application and waiting for an Apple Update helped last time, but this is a problem for many mac users trying to recover from a paper jam. We can't access HP direct.
